1970 Volkswagen Square Back
My first car was a 1970 Volkswagen Square Back that got handed down from my dad; to my mom; then my brother and eventually me.

My brother fixed it up which became the ultimate surf mobile cruising down Pacific Coast Highway in many beach cities in Southern California. Its first color was factory painted fire engine red and ended up white. By the time I got it, it was white with pinkish red spots all over it. I had to use red primer for all the rust spots on it from being parked outside in the salty ocean air. After my brother fixed up this beach cruiser, he smashed it up on a Mexican surfing trip and it ended up being towed all the way from somewhere in Mexico to San Pedro, California which was 200 miles. My grandfather had to pay this tow bill which was really never discussed in the family. So I was the beneficiary of this ultimate beach car and she lasted until my first year of college. I'll never forget her.

(Crain’s) — Ford Motor Co. plans to add 1,200 jobs when it begins making the Explorer sport-utility vehicle at its Far South Side factory on Torrence Avenue later this year, Crain’s has learned.

Gov. Pat Quinn is due to join Ford executives when they announce the Explorer production at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the plant near 130th Street. Plans to bring the Explorer from Louisville, Ky., to the under-utilized Chicago plant were first reported by Crain’s nearly a year ago. The move was helped by recent tax credits approved by Mr. Quinn.

Leading Your Company Through Times of Change

Change is an inevitable part of the business world. Companies must continually adapt to the conditions around them if they want to stay ahead. Unfortunately, many people find comfort in routine. They relish the status quo and view any change — even a positive one — with uneasiness or fear.
As leaders, we must help our employees not only deal with change, but learn to embrace it. When the change involves making tough decisions like cutting staff or decreasing budgets, accomplishing this goal can become even more difficult. But whatever the change — whether positive or negative — there are some ways you can make the transition go more smoothly for everyone involved:
• Acknowledge and understand your employees’ fears. Any change can bring with it fear, particularly fear of the unknown. With layoffs, those remaining may fear losing their jobs, too. Acknowledging those fears and reassuring your staff that they are important to you should help a bit. But even a promotion, which on the surface seems like an extremely positive change, can bring fear. The promoted employee may worry about failing or becoming over-whelmed by the new responsibilities. In those cases, assure the person that you believe in her and that you will be there to help her make a smooth transition into her new duties.
• Keep everyone informed. When change occurs, make sure your staff hears about the change from you — not through the office grapevine. Be open and honest about the change and your reasons for making it. Don’t try to gloss things over or oversell the benefits of the change. Both will hurt your credibility and only increase resistance and fear. Encourage questions from your staff, and let them know how things are going throughout the process.
• Give affected people an active role in implementing the change whenever possible. If you’re planning to make a change that affects a particular employee or team, try to give that person or group a say in how the change will happen. This may not always be possible, but when it is, it will give your staff a sense of ownership and control over the situation, helping to ease some of their fears and replace them with excitement for the change.
• Remain visible and accessible. Check in with staff members affected by change frequently to see how things are going. Offer encouragement, answer questions, and let them know you are proud of the accomplishments they are making.
• Give people time to adjust. Change, both positive and negative, affects different people in different ways. Some people need time to let go of the old ways (even grieve for them) before they can come to terms with the change and move on. Give your employees time to work through this adjusting process.

The future of auto dealerships part one

With the talk of a recession (and we're all sick of hearing about it) one wonders where the auto industry will go in the next few years? Obviously a focus on fuel economy, better mileage and so on. As the auto makers grapple with pension plans and a changing world, where does that leave you, the serviceperson or salesperson that relies on the industry to put food on the table?

For starters, there's a good chance people won't be buying as many new cars as they once were. So the service crew better brace themselves for a lot more repairs. Much of this battle will be fought on the front lines, convincing consumers that the dealership is the best place to get work done. Do you have the proper paperwork and supplies to keep things in order? That is of course, what we can do for you. Stockpiling on supplies will help the shop continue to run smoothly.

Sales staff may have a difficult time with selling less than desirable cars, especially with everyone watching their wallets. The Toyota Prius is already in back order of upwards to several months. Of course, there are many cars that are fuel efficient and will get tax rebates from the government when purchased. Letting your customers know about strong alternatives to the cars that get all the press can certainly give you an advantage in the long run.

One big way to keep moving to make sure all of the gears at the dealership are moving well. Is everyone communicating properly? Do you have the proper paperwork and supplies to keep things moving forward? By simply answering the phone, providing quality customer service, and having the office supplies and tools to make the job go through, are very simple ways to get ahead. You'd be surprised how the little things matter in a new economy.
